Customer Review: Favorite Wii Game!! Loads of fun!
I absolutely love playing games that involving racing and when I saw that you get to use a wheel to play this game I thought that this was perfect. I got this game with the Wii wheel and bought another one of the nintendo wheels separately. For those who complain about the unlocking, it’s not that difficult to unlock the extra courses. I normally play this game with another person but when I was alone one day I played for a few hours and unlocked all the courses and a few characters. I didn’t take that long and now we can have even more fun with this game. Although the blue shell has become my worst nightmare this game is my favorite game for the Wii. I play this with adults and children and teenagers, all enjoy it. I would put this on your must have list if you are a Wii owner. Just put it in and enjoy it!
Customer Review: Driving Ms. Mario…
My wife was somewhat excited to finally check out this game. I’ll admit – so was I.
I was impressed at how well the steering worked. Now, renting it, we didn’t get a wheel, but I was glad to see that you can hold the wiimote flat – buttons up – and tilt it side to side just as well as you can hold it buttons-facing-you and tilt it. Once I learned this, it became more comfortable to play.
But it didn’t become more fun. There seems to be some argument over the value of the game as a single-player. I can say first-hand that we had more fun playing together than either of us did on our own.
Mario Kart Wii just bombards you. You can be sitting in first place, minding your business, just driving along when a Koopa shell hits you. You fly into the air, land on your wheels, your character shakes his head, and WAM – some “POW” block goes off, sending you flying into the air again. You land, shake your head, and WHACK – another character smacks into you, forcing you to wait while the car spins in place – shake your head AGAIN – and finally drive off. You’re now last place, and have sat there for probably 10 seconds while shouting “Come on!!!!”
This doesn’t happen ALL the time, but you can be confident that when it does, you’ll be restarting the race, or quitting altogether. Sometimes you can get out of this – the best (and really only way I’ve seen so far) is if you’re carrying a Koopa shell yourself – you can launch it backwards to thwart off the first attack. However, with the POW block, the ink-squirting squid, and the homing “blue shell” that’s been mentioned elsewhere, you’re pretty much S.O.L. The only good thing is that with some of the attacks – like the POW block, the lightning bolt – it affects everyone around you. So unless the second place character launched it, you probably won’t lose your position. But in general it becomes frustrating, and I don’t think that randomly generated “frustration” equates to what some might consider a “challenge.”
Now, I don’t want to hear any of you Wii-addicts start going on about “Oh you have to have the skill.” I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – you’re controlling a little cartoon character in a go-kart by tilting a piece of plastic. There’s little skill involved. I drive a 2000 Dodge Viper GTS coupe – I truly understand the art of “driving skills.” Mario Kart Wii is nothing like driving a Dodge Viper!
I think the game would be fun with a lot of people – when it’s more of a free-for-all, and not the computer SEEMING like it gangs up on the human player. But I played it for maybe 2, 3 hours, and I’m done. I won’t play it again, and I won’t miss it. On a good note, it’s presentation, control interface, and playability is better than most Wii games to date. My demerits are more against content and gameplay than anything else. It works very well – it just irritates you in the process!
I won’t say skip it. It might be just your cup of tea. Just maybe rent it before you buy. These days, it’s very easy to waste money on video games.

Two weeks after it was released in the US late last year, the Nintendo Wii came out in Japan, and consoles literally flew off the shelves. Reports received from areas such as Akihabara (the major electronics district of Tokyo) and Shinjuku (another massive shopping location) said that it was nearly impossible to walk down the sidewalk anywhere near an electronics store.
Without doubt, the most popular choice of games console by the Japanese people is the Nintendo Wii, although the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have sold quite well in Japan. You couldn’t escape the ads for Wii anywhere last year, and it seemed to be all Japanese video gamers were talking about. So, why is the Nintendo Wii, loved so much in Japan?
To start with, the Nintendo’s have always outsold the other gaming systems in Japan. A survey noted that the Nintendo games tend to contain subject matter that was interesting to Japanese gamers. They said that the Nintendo games appeal to all ages and tastes.
The interactive features of the Nintendo Wii have become extremely popular. The Nintendo Wii makes use of a new remote sensing technology, which means that while playing a game, such as golf you can actually take a swing to hit the ball. Naturally, this technology has caught on with the non-gamers as well as gamers. Recent studies have discovered that more woman and older adults, demographic groups that don’t normally go for games consoles in a big way, get a big kick out of the Wii’s interactive features.
There was tons of promotion and advertising. It was almost impossible to get anywhere near an electronics store in Japan at the end of last year without noticing a guy dressed up like a giant remote controller, or kids of all ages crammed around a Wii demo console. The Wii was witnessed just about everywhere last year, much more so than any of the other consoles. With such a big push off, it had to be popular.
One of the main strengths of the Wii console is it sports games. Lately, sports games have become more and more popular in Japan, and they have started to outsell the more traditionally popular adventure games such as Legend of Zelda. The Wii offers great quality, realistic golf, baseball and tennis, among others. For the Japanese gamers, these are a great step forward from the sports games of yesterday.
Then again, maybe the massive popularity of the Wii in Japan is due to those wacky pictures in its safety manual. The Wii has been stirring up headlines worldwide mainly because of the Wii strap related incidents, and the Japanese safety manual covers everything. It’s packed with comically rendered pictures of housewives whacking their husbands around the head with controllers, Wii-motes stuck halfway down a child’s throats, and people injuring themselves in a variety of outlandish ways. Do a quick internet search yourself and see if you can find some pictures!
While the Nintendo Wii is undoubtedly the most popular new gaming system in Japan, the PlayStation 3 does come in as a close second. Some sources on the web believe that the PS3 does actually sell better, but it’s hard to say for sure. Certainly, the new interactive features are a draw for Japanese people, who are always searching for something new to enhance their gaming experience.
